Motorola revolutionizes smartphone video performance with Vidhance

Camera quality has long been one of the top priorities for Motorola’s smartphone business. In 2018, Motorola saw the trend toward increased video use in society accelerating. This is when Motorola chose Imint Image Intelligence AB as a strategic partner to take their video performance to the next level by integrating Vidhance video enhancement features. Read about how they proceeded to revolutionize smartphone video performance together in a variety of handsets, from budget and mid-tier to two trailblazing flagships.

Bringing stable video performance to the masses

The relationship between the global smartphone giant and the Swedish leading video enhancement software provider flourished over the years. Imint technology has already been used in 14 Motorola phones just in 2019 and 2020, and more are on the way. One of the key differentiators in Motorola and Imint’s collaboration has been integration of state-of-the-art video stabilization and other video enhancement features in lower end handsets.

“We are proud to help Motorola bring stable video performance to the masses with our Vidhance features in lower end phones. This is a testament to Motorola’s belief in a video-centric society powered by 5G and their in-depth understanding of user needs, which makes them particularly easy and stimulating to work with. Motorola’s phones, both flagship and non-flagship, have served as excellent platforms for implementing and showcasing innovative video enhancement features,” says Niclas Elvgren, Global Manager Sales Engineering, Imint.

Win-win expert-level dialogue to meet new needs

Imint and Motorola’s engineering teams engage in ongoing dialogue and put their heads together in a number of ways to innovate and meet new demands. For instance, joint workshops are held and feedback from testing and reviews is shared between the teams to bolster innovation and a needs-driven approach to video quality. In this context, a subject matter expert on video from Motorola works hand in hand with all the new developments from the Imint team.

“Imint has a strong video-centric mindset and capabilities well aligned with market trends and industry demand. Over the years, we have established strong expert-level collaboration between engineering teams, and Imint has grown into an increasingly mature and dependable partner. They are responsive when we pose questions about how a feature would make sense for end users and do a good job of reciprocating with solutions that add value for them,” says Chekit Mehta, Senior Manager, Computer Vision, Motorola.

Edge+ set a new standard in video performance

In 2020, Motorola was looking to set a new standard in video performance with its first truly premium flagship handset in years. By integrating horizon correction, dynamic blur reduction and field of view correction along with the latest video stabilization algorithms, the phone scored high in DXOMARK: overall video 105 and 95 in stabilization.

In addition to its 108-megapixel camera sensor and an immersive 21:9 aspect ratio AMOLED Endless Edge display that waterfalls over its sides, this phone was one of the first ever to introduce Imint’s horizon correction. With Vidhance Horizon Correction, the horizon in a video can be leveled automatically without impacting stabilization quality.

“One of the qualities we admire about Motorola is that they are not afraid to be the first to launch a new feature in their phones. This is because they are in tune with user needs and prioritize meeting them with innovations as opposed to waiting for another smartphone OEM to try something first. Our collaboration benefitted from Motorola’s trailblazing, needs-driven approach as Motorola was among the first to implement Vidhance Horizon Correction in the Edge+ and Selfie Mode in the Moto G100,” says Niclas Elvgren, Global Manager Sales Engineering, Imint.

Motorola reimagines front camera video quality in Moto G100

With the Moto G100 in 2021, Motorola is innovating this time by enabling video recording using both the front and rear cameras simultaneously. This sets the bar for video stabilization higher, because users will expect the video on both sides to be relatively similar in terms of stabilization. In addition, Motorola’s usage data shows a strong trend toward increased usage of the front camera, which has traditionally been somewhat neglected in favor of the rear camera. This points to a need to reimagine front camera video quality.

To enable both solid simultaneous camera stabilization and improved front camera video quality, the Moto G100 leveraged the latest Vidhance video stabilization algorithms. It is one of the first handsets to bring another innovative new feature to market – Selfie Mode. By leveraging state-of-the-art AI algorithms, Selfie Mode puts the focus of stabilization on the user’s face.

“Selfie Mode plays an important role in reimagining front camera video quality on the Moto G100 to meet customer needs. It has received very positive feedback throughout our rigorous testing cycle, and I’m confident that end users will be delighted with the video quality of the Moto G100,” says Rahul Desai, Director of Software Product Management, Motorola.
